The_Shackleton_was developed by_Avro_as a long-range_maritime patrol aircraft_for use by the_Royal Air Force_(RAF). Named after polar explorer Sir_Ernest Shackleton it is a development of the famous wartime_Avro Lancaster_bomber. Entering service with the RAF in 1951, primarily in the_anti-submarine warfare and_maritime patrol_aircraft roles; it also had other roles including airborne early warning which it would continue to do until its retirement in 1991.
